Book: Snyder, Rachel Louise. No Visible Bruises: What We Dont Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us
(2019).
Format: Start with your name, course, and title of assignment on first page. 12-point font (max), double- spaced, normal margins, minimum 6 (six) pages in length (no maximum). Paper format is question & answer. Make sure to indicate where each question & answer begins and ends (Question 1, Question 2, etc.). Avoid automatic indentation keep margins at 1. Save your file as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf and upload it to the submission link on Blackboard. Other file formats or emailed submissions not accepted.
Writing style: Academic (semi-formal), with use of first person encouraged when appropriate.
Citation: I expect the majority of your answers to be in your own words and phrasing, however, you are required to include at least two (2) direct quotes from the Snyder book in each answer (a minimum of 6 direct quotes total) to provide direct support for your arguments and analyses. Keep quotes fairly brief (no more than a sentence or so). Always put quotation marks around direct quotes and include a page number from the book. If you have an e-book version, let me know by including a note on your paper to that effect. See questions below for examples of correct citation.
Questions:
1. In the preface, Snyder argues that with domestic violence, often there is no end date for the victims (p. 9). Drawing on evidence from Part 1: The End of the book, explain what she means by that statement and how the case of Michelle and Rocky demonstrate that leaving an abusive relationship is not an easy solution or even possible for some. In other words, explain, using evidence from the book, why asking victims why dont you just leave? is neither sufficient nor helpful.
2. In the preface, Snyder discusses some shared characteristics of many abusers, such as they themselves were abused as children or they witnessed it, internalized misogyny (hatred of women), narcissistic tendencies, and a background of poverty, addiction, and desperation. Drawing on evidence from Part 2: The Beginning, discuss the dynamics and conditions of toxic masculinity that contribute to mens violence and abuse toward women. Situate your analysis in the larger cultural context of gender norms and expectations of masculinity.
3. In Part 3 The Middle, Snyder states: All of these critical gaps in the system often make the biggest difference between who lives and who dies (p. 215). Drawing on examples from Part 3, identify what some of those gaps are that shes talking about. Be sure and discuss why the shelter model has not proven sufficient. Next, discuss some of the newer methods that she argues can help fill some of those gaps. If you have any ideas of your own to add to those in the book, feel free to include them.
