Analyze a piece of visual media: it can be a TV show, commercial, film, comic, poster, or even a buildings architecture. Identify an argument that the piece of media makes, and explain its importance to understanding the work as a whole.
One way you could outline this essay goes like this:
First Paragraph: State the name of the work and identity the argument you believe the work is making.
Body: Find ~4 examples that illustrate why you feel the work is saying what you say it is. Each of these 4 examples is then broken up into parts:
Start out with a topic sentence What is the texts argument? Why should that matter to us?
Use “evidence” (places in the text, dialogue, or cinematography) that answer questions like:
How does this passage, scene, character, or culture affect reader biases?
How do they change if different biases or assumptions are used instead?
Utilize only a sentence or two as your evidence to make a short summary of the piece of media so that anyone who hasn’t seen the same work will know what you’re referring to.
Then come back to your topic sentence. Summarize how the evidence you gave answers the questions asked in your topic sentence.
Last Paragraph: Make a judgment on the work. Does it seem to use the biases and stereotypes underlying its thesis deliberately? Is this a good or bad thing? Does it subvert those biases in a way you find interesting?
