Sign Language Chapter 9 (Language) (Cite your Sources) Language is a form of communication that is based on a system of symbols. While we traditionally associate language with spoken or written communication, it also includes signed communication and gestures which often serve as the primary method of language for individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. You are the caregiver of a deaf child and have no prior experience with sign language. You must quickly acquire the necessary knowledge to facilitate the childs acquisition of functional language. As part of this process, you must gain insight so you are able to address the following questions. What is sign language and what is the most commonly used form of sign language in the U.S.? Provide an overview of this form of sign language. In addition, discuss how is it different than English? Describe methods often used to teach sign language. Finally, would you also want the child to learn English and be able to speak in English? Why or why not?
