Should Police Chiefs have the authority to suspend an officer for more than two (2) days before a disciplined police officer can request a LEBOR hearing as enumerated in current law.

Review the attached documents and respond to the responses that are below. State whether you agree or disagree to the student’s comments and why?

1.) Should Police Chiefs have the authority to suspend an officer for more than two (2) days before a disciplined police officer can request a LEBOR hearing as enumerated in current law.

I do believe police chiefs should be given more authority over disciplining officers and depending on the severity of the accusation/conduct, chief of police should be able tom suspend an officer for more than two days.

2.) Do you think civilian review boards will help or hinder police recruitment and what is your thought about replacing police on the LEBOR hearing panel with civilians?

I honestly believe that civilian review boards would hurt the police recruitment process rather than help because people would probably expect perfection in every aspect of the job right off the bat which is not exactly realistic. The goal of the recruitment process should be to find who has good potential and who could develop well within the role. Of course, its ideal to find someone that would be amazing right off the bat but like most things, people learn and grow as they do something more and more which I can account for being a RA on campus. I was recruited because I had potential to do great work and be a good resource to students and now 3 years later, I am one of 8 head RAs on campus. I never would have been able to be hired directly to this position, but I was able to grow in my time within the role.
