Shakespeare and Csaire; Plus Shakespeare behind Bars

Discussion Board #9: Shakespeare and Csaire
At one point, when his director-friend, Jean-Marie Serreau, asked Csaire if he really wanted to undertake the adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Csaire apparently said: Ok, but I want to do it my way. When Id finished the job, I realized that there wasnt much Shakespeare left.
In this post, please pick a specific character or production element or plot change (for example, the introduction of a new character, the ending of the play, a new scene, a change in a character’s attitude) in Shakespeares The Tempest and Csaires A Tempest and use it to make an argument about how much Shakespeare there is left in Csaire. You must use 2 quotes from each play (4 quotes in all!).

Discussion Board #10: “Shakespeare behind Bars”
By now you should have watched Shakespeare behind Bars — a documentary film about a production of Shakespeares The Tempest by inmates at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Kentucky. The film examines how a “classic” travels into a very different world than the ones we have been considering so far in our class.
Please write a post that uses some of the themes and issues we have addressed in our discussions of Shakespeares and Csaires plays authority, race, power and the state, the power of art, violence to discuss the way that Shakespeares play travels into the society that is the prison.
