FUNCTIONAL AREA PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
For this paper,
you are going to expand on one of the discussion forums that you have already written. You will choose one of the topics from your previous discussions (Management) and elaborate on the current trend in this area.
Your paper should include an introduction of the topic that includes a historical definition based on literature,
a discussion of the current research in the field (last 5 years only), and a section that addresses future questions that will need to be addressed and/or explored in research.
This paper should draw on a minimum of ten substantial journal article resources and will be 10 to 12 pages in length
(not including the title page, abstract, or reference pages) observing all APA style conventions.
You may use any articles or writings that you wrote about in your previous discussion forums in this course.
The organization of your paper should be as follows:
Title Page
Introduction: Gives an overview of your topic and discusses the organization of your paper. You would also include your historical definition here based on the literature.
Current Research: In this section, you will include identified themes you have found in the research articles that you reviewed.
You will support each of these themes with your research articles (See Functional Paper Video in Module 5: Week 5 for more information).
Future Questions: In this section, you will discuss the future research areas that were present in the articles you synthesized.
You should list and discuss the question and use multiple articles to provide support.

This week you’re going to be provided with an opportunity to do a deep dive in a functional area of business that’s perhaps in your discipline or in your interest area, perhaps in your concentration. So the idea is that we’re going to expand a little bit beyond our forum post here. So you’ve noticed we’ve been covering quite a few topics in business and they all related to the different disciplines. Now we’re going to take a deep dive into one of them and probably into something that you are familiar with or in your discipline. Now this is similar to a literature review. You’ll actually do literature reviews as you progress through the program. But this is a literature review on a very small scale. So in this assignment, you’re going to choose a topic from your discussion forums. So it can be from any of the first four weeks. Wow, So you can choose a current issue that you’ve already written on. You can choose a new current issue. But either way you’re going to choose a current trend for this particular assignment. And you’re going to use a minimum of ten additional substantial journal article resources. So the idea is that hey, I’m going to take the topic that I’m interested in and maybe it is understanding the customer journey using technology. And I am going to take my discussion forum and I am going to expand on that. I’m going to create a paper. And in my paper I have an introduction that includes some type of historical definition based on literature. So I need to define what a customer journey is or I need to define what the decision-making processes, whatever the topic may be. And then I’m going to talk about current literature and last five-year. So what are people saying about it? What has been research? What do we know? So that’s going to be the bulk of your paper. So you may have two to three pages on the intro and this row definition, you may have six to seven pages on the discussion of the current research. And then your final conclusion section is just going to talk about what do we need to explore next? What are the questions that researchers say we still don’t know? And so you’re going to adhere to the APA guidelines and you should use the rubric provided it gives a definition of each of the areas. And so just know that as far as formatting goes, your paper requirements, when I say 10 to 12 pages, that does not include title page, abstract references, etc. So that is just ten to 12 pages of content. And that’s what you should be shooting for. So I look forward to reading your deep dive into your area.
