The purpose of this essay is to identify, summarize, analyze, apply and discuss one criminological theory in depth, as it applies to a crime(s) of your choosing. I would suggest you select a crime/criminal first, and then determine what theory could explain their behavior. For example, does the criminal display low self-control? If so, general theory of crime might be an appropriate theory. Or is there evidence that the criminal likely learned their criminal behavior from their siblings? If so, social learning theory might be applicable. For this assignment, you select ONE theory to discuss in-depth as it relates to ONE criminal who has committed a crime or multiple crimes. This is not a summary of your crime/criminal, but an analysis of the theory, and why it might explain your criminal’s offenses.

Each writing assignment needs to include:

A summary of ONE criminological theory that applies to the crime(s).

Use your textbook to identify the applicable criminological theories and the components of each criminological theory. Summarize the theories and the components of the theories.
Provide at least THREE peer reviewed journal articles about your theory that presents research in critically analyzing the applicable and components of the theory. For example, what does research say about your theory? Is it supported and how? (This should be half the paper)

Select a crime or criminal (past or present) for theory application. You can locate crimes and criminals here. (Links to an external site.)You can go to the ‘resources’ tab, and select ‘crime library’ to locate a crime to research.

Provide an in-depth analysis that suggest there is evidence of the theory based on the history of the offender and/or the offender’s behavior. (This should be half the paper). You are discussing the evidence that suggests the offender committed these crime(s) based on the criminological theory’s explanation.
