School Counseling and Interventions

CASE STUDY #1: REALITY THERAPY/CHOICE THEORY (3 PAGES)
Howard is a 3rd grade African American student in a rural elementary school. He moved with his mom when he was in kindergarten to his current school. Prior to living in a rural area, he lived in a city filled with crime. His mother is significantly older and has two children in their late 20s who do not live at home. When Howard arrived at the elementary school in kindergarten, he would run and hide in lockers when he became upset. He would talk to himself or imaginary people. Now as a third grader, he continues to run when upset, anxious, or frustrated though he no longer hides in lockers. He is a perfectionist and becomes upset when he falls behind the class. He has a difficult time starting his work as well. In the mornings, he can be found walking around the classroom having full conversations with his hands like they are puppets. His grades are starting to suffer because the work is getting harder. He has one very good friend but other than that, he does not socialize with others. He usually talks to himself at lunch and recess.
You are the counselor in Howard`s school. Answer each of the following questions focusing on Reality Theory strategies and techniques:
If you use Reality Therapy with Howard, what would it look like or sound like?
What Reality Therapy techniques would you use with him?
Tell me what you think would be best for him to be more successful in school.
What would you recommend to his parent and school if anything?
CASE STUDY#2: SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY (SFBT) (2 PAGES)
You have a 10-year-old client named Mike. He is in the 5th grade, and he has had trouble making friends since kindergarten. He was diagnosed with Aspergers Disease in the 4th grade and has an IEP. He has 12 referrals from school that range from bullying, physical contact, unsafe behavior, and teasing/taunting others. Many of these referrals have taken place at recess or the cafeteria. Mike has repeatedly made inappropriate statements to female students and gestures. He has stated,” you are good at using chopsticks”, to a student of Asian descent. He has stated, “you are hotter than the sun”, to several female students. He has said, “mmm tasty” as he walks past several female students. He has sniffed several girls’ hair while in line. He has kissed a girl on the head. He has been told to stop by the female students and continued the behavior. He comes into your session today very sad. He says to you, I feel like I am a bad person. I dont have any friends and I keep getting in trouble at school.
You are the counselor in Mike`s school. Answer each of the following questions.
If you were using SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY (SFBT) what might your session look and sound like?
Using SFBT techniques, how would your session look differently than other theories. (If I was your supervisor observing, how would I know you were using SFBT?)
