Select two American films that address ‘Romance in Film During World War II’ within its context. One film is from the 1930-1950s (I am choosing the film: Casablanca, 1942, Michael Curtiz). The other film is from the last 20 years (I am choosing: Allied, 2016, Robert Zemeckis).
CONTENT AND QUESTIONS
-Analyze each films influence on American culture both now and when the film was released.
-Discuss how the films depict your topic, comparing them with one another.
-What do the films say about the world of its time and the world today?
-How do the films affect you personally? How and why?
-Some questions that may help you think about your topic and films before you begin writing your paper. You do not need to address these questions directly within your paper:
-What is the larger story the films tell?
-How does the film use characters to develop and reinforce your chosen topic?
-How does the director use scenes and the overall story to address your topic?
-Feel free to use both primary and secondary sources. However, I am interested more in your critical thinking and the use you make of your chosen material.
-The paper is to be 10 pages in length, using 1-inch margins all around with 12- point font and double-spaced. Title and bibliography do not count toward the length of the paper.
-Use proper citations and include a References page or a Works Cited page.
ORGANIZATION OF PAPER
-Begin with an introductory paragraph that clearly identifies the purpose of the paper, including the titles and dates of the films under discussion. All film titles should be italicized.
-The second paragraph should introduce your topic, define any terms, and briefly state why you think this topic is an important one to examine in the context of film.
-For each film, discuss how your topic is addressed. Think in terms of filmic elements, including camera work, editing, pacing, sound, dialogue, setting, characters, story line, and ending.
-What does each film say about the time in which it was produced? -In other words, how does each film reflect social attitudes or political issues going on at the time?
-Ideally, you should develop at least three points of comparison.
-Choose specific scenes in order to support your observations.
-Identify the time-mark of each scene, or its approximate point in the film.
-Dont summarize what happens in the scene; rather, describe how the film tells its story through camera work, lighting, sound, setting, and so on.
-Your concluding paragraph should reflect on the significance of your comparison. What did you learn by comparing two films from different time periods? How does the comparison contribute to an understanding of American culture and/or film history?
-Cite all sources used in the body of the paper as well as on a Works Cited page (if in MLA style) or References page (if in APA style).
-Words not your own must be enclosed in quotation marks and cited.
-Ideas not your own must either be quoted or paraphrased and cited.
-The paper should be at least 1800 words, not including the References page.
EVALUATION
-The paper will be evaluated on a scale of 100 points:
-10 points for inviting intro that states papers purpose;
-10 points for second paragraph on topic;
-25 points for analysis of early film that uses specific examples to support points;
-25 points for analysis of later film that uses specific examples to support points;
-20 points for thoughtful, reflective conclusion;
-10 points for complete References page at end of paper following APA style or Works Cited page following MLA style;
-1 point deducted for each grammatical and spelling error.
-Papers who do not acknowledge sources in the body of the paper and on a separate References / Works Cited page will receive a 0.
