Compare/Contrast Essay
Purpose
A jury is made up of twelve citizens who walk into a courtroom and decide whether a defendant is guilty or innocent. Murder on the Orient Express plays with the same idea. There are twelve people on the train who act as jury and executioner of a criminal. Justice is served in a way that it wasn’t guaranteed in the courts, or was it just revenge motivated by grief? Justice is often juxtaposed with revenge in this novel, forcing us to think about the ways in which the two are similar and different.
One of the reasons this story is so popular is because the novel lives in a moral gray area, fairly unique in a genre known for its black-and-white sense of justice. The story’s themes of grief and revenge present a conundrum that even Christie’s celebrated Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, can’t adequately judge.
The purpose of this assignment is to write a compare/contrast argument essay concerning the themes of justice vs revenge in Murder on the Orient Express. Your essay should discuss both the similarities and differences between these topics. You should include a clear definition for each term in your essay, then provide examples for the terms in action within the story. You will then argue which theme is at the heart of Christie’s novel.
Your essay should not simply raise series of questions, but rather should provide an argument for your reader. This is not just an informational essay, you should use at least two outside sources to convince your reader that your interpretation of the compare/contrast elements is the best interpretation. Follow the conventions of academic discourse and state your interpretation in a thesis, support that thesis with evidence from the text, and reaffirm your thesis in the conclusion.
