Research has shown when people hear the term prejudice, they initially think of minority racial and ethnic groups. While this is a very important area of consideration, prejudice also occurs with other groups, such as those with mental illness. Research the topic of stigma associated with mental illness and discuss where this develops, how it persists, and how prominent such stigma is in todays society.

Remember how the discussion assignments work. You need to respond to one discussion question with an essay of 400-600 words with at least two references. By Sunday, you need to submit two video responses to people who, ideally, answered questions other than the one you answered. Video responses should be meaningful and be between 1:30 and 2:00 minutes in length.

Please include the question you are answering at the beginning of the posting. If you notice that several people have answered a particular question, try to answer a different one. The more different discussion topics we have, the better.

Here are the questions for Week Five:
2. Research the topic of stereotyping in everyday language. Discuss the research you find and provide examples of how stereotypes are continued in everyday language we use. Are there any recommendations in the research to change this pattern of everyday stereotypes?
3. Read the following post on the Psychology of Extremism (https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/teaching-current-directions-in-psychological-science-16#extremism). What does the article say about how extremism develops? Make sure to highlight the points of similarities versus differences. What does other research say about the psychology of extremism?
4. What is the effect of racial bias in the jury room? Research studies or articles on this topic and discuss the findings from the studies. Is racial bias present in juries? If so, what effect does that have on jury decisions, sentencing, and incarceration?
5. Pick a theory of aggression and discuss that theory at length. What is the basis of the theory, how does it explain aggression originates, develops, and ultimately manifests? What is the explanation for why aggression continues? Based on that theory, are there any ways to decrease aggression?
6. Choose an influence of aggression, as discussed in Chapter 10. Talk about that influencer and how it is theorized to increases or decreases aggression in society. What evidence is there to support this as being an influencer? Are there any ways to decrease the influence of this on aggression?
