According to Chapter 8, interpersonal conflict is defined as “an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals.” In this application assignment, you will analyze a recent conflict experience in a 3-4 page, double-spaced paper.
More specifically, your paper should follow the general format outlined here:
You should begin with an introductory paragraph that identifies your primary topic and preview the paper’s main points.
You should then provide a brief description (i.e., 1-2 paragraphs) of the conflict you’ve chosen to analyze; in considering which details about the conflict to include in this section, use the definition of interpersonal conflict that is cited above. Also, because our interest in this class is interpersonal communication, please focus on a conflict that occurred between you and just one other person (e.g., a friend, family member, romantic partner, etc.).
Next, you will describe how elements of the “dark side of communication” such as deception, embarrassment, jealousy, power, and verbal aggression (see Chapter 9) played a role in the conflict situation. As you write, please provide specific examples of communicative behaviors that fit these categories.
In the following section, you will identify the conflict management styles that you and the other person used when addressing the conflict’s central issue(s). As in the previous section, please cite specific verbal and nonverbal actions that support your conclusion(s).
The next section should focus on if/how you resolved the conflict and whether you were satisfied with the outcome.
Finally, you will conclude the paper by noting any lessons that you learned from the conflict and how these lessons might help you improve your ability to manage conflict in the future.
Your paper should adhere to the Writing Policy outlined in the course syllabus, which includes being formatted in appropriate APA (7th edition) style. To demonstrate connections with course content and protect yourself from plagiarism, you should cite the textbook throughout the paper.
