The purpose of this paper is to explain and then refute relativism. Relativism is the idea that ethics is simply a matter of personal opinion and that no one’s opinion is any better than another. Relativism is normally a reaction to the failure of moral absolutism, the idea that there is one right answer or system in ethics that applies to all people in all situations.
Ethics, like life, lives in the gray area, and as ethical thinkers we have to be okay with not having precision in this discipline. Though there may not be absolute or perfect answers in ethics, we can maintain standards and hold that there are better answers than others. This is a claim that relativism denies. Relativism claims that EVERY answer is right. In other words, it destroys the very idea of ethics, that there is good and bad or right and wrong. Since this is an ethics class, you are to refute this theory.
In addition, you are required to apply one of the other ethical theories we have covered up to this point (Hedonism or DST) to demonstrate that while we may argue against objective moral standards (true for everyone at all times), we do not have to become ethical relativists. This DOES NOT mean simply restating these ethical theories as evidence of their efficacy. Rather, your task is to use the benefits of Hedonism or DST to demonstrate that ethical standards can exist, even if we doubt the existence of objective ethical truths.
