Presenting Your Scholarly Work

This week, you will complete a PowerPoint presentation of your project. Think about your most immediate presentation opportunity and target audience. Based on your experience, recommended reading, and personal research, what are some of the key strategies necessary to effectively connect with your target audience?

Introduction

In week 7, the lesson title is “Presentation of Scholarly Work”. After all of your valuable work is complete and you’ve realized positive outcomes, it’s important to think about how to share your results so that others can benefit from your work. Here is a look at the course outcomes (COs) that we’ll be addressing this week:

CO#1: Apply evidence-based leadership skills and concepts in the execution and evaluation of an executive-level practice change project. (PO 4,5)

CO #3: Exemplify professional values and scholarship that support the role of a student in a practicum setting during the execution and evaluation phases of a practice change project. (PO 4) (this is in reference to your time at your practicum site and you’ll see this each week)

I encourage you to keep these course outcomes in mind while you read your text, articles, and lessons, as you participate in TDs, as you participate in practicum hours, and as you complete assignments.

Reading:

This week you have two articles from professional journals that will provide you with important background information for your threaded discussion participation.

Lesson:

By this point in your MSN journey, you should all be comfortable with creating presentations. As leaders in your organizations you’ll be expected to present on a number of topics to a variety of groups. Although PowerPoint isn’t perfect, it remains a very helpful tool in creating and delivering an effective presentation. The extent to which you can master PowerPoint and use its tools, will be the extent to which you can deliver an interesting and persuasive presentation. The week 7 lesson reviews some very basic tips for creating an effective PowerPoint presentation.

TD:

The week 7 TD builds on the reading and the lesson content. Every audience has a set of unique characteristics. Even though you may use the same slide deck for two different audiences, each of those audiences comes to the presentation with a unique expectation of what they need to hear about your project. A nursing unit staff will have very different expectations and questions than the organization’s senior leadership group. It’s important to know your audience and taylor your presentation to meet their needs. Think about one stakeholder audience that you might give your presentation to. Identify them. Tell us what you think they most need to know about your project and how your presentation addresses those potential questions. If you have another stakeholder group in mind, it would be even more helpful to compare and contrast those groups. I’m looking forward to a great discussion!
