Planning a Sequence of Math Lessons

You have been assigned a mathematics topic suitable for Years 5 and 6 students to study for one week. The topic you have been assigned is: ‘Solve mathematical problems with standard written methods’

For this task, you will:

a. Plan a sequence of five mathematics lessons.
b. Write a detailed justification/rationale of ONE lesson in your sequence.

PART A: Five-Lesson Sequence (800 words)

Prepare a sequence of five one hour-long mathematics lessons (one hour each day). The lesson sequence should be written using the template provided.

In the template, ‘main teaching approach’ refers to your pedagogical approach.

In the first page of the template:

1. Describe the overarching mathematical focus of the lesson sequence and relevance of the focus for students mathematical learning. Explain how each lesson in the sequence contributes to developing students understanding of the mathematical focus. (250 words)
2. Provide an overview of each lesson
3. Attach a copy of the five main tasks as appendix files.

PART B: Individual Justification of ONE Lesson (600 words)

write a detailed justification for the inclusion of one of the lessons in the sequence that they jointly planned. In this way, two lessons from the five-lesson sequence will be thoroughly rationalised. The basis of the justification for the inclusion of the lesson should include (a) the Australian Curriculum or the Victorian Curriculum, (b) the textbook (Reys et al., 2020), and (c) mathematics education research publications.

(I will attach pages from the textbook (Reys et al., 2020) relevant to the topic: ‘Solve mathematical problems with standard written methods’)

The sources you should use are: The Australian OR Victorian Curriculum, the textbook (Reys et al., 2020), and mathematics education research publications. I have also attached a word document with math sites that you might find useful and perhaps use.
