The Method of Philosophy
1. Philosophers begin with a philosophical inquiry (question). In this case, the question involves your position on the place of the mind, the body, and/or the spirit. Specifically, consider the question: What aspect of a participant’s (human) being is at risk when participating in full-contact sports such as football, hockey, and soccer? Another way to think about this would be to consider the question posed to the audience in the documentary, Head Games (2012): “How much of you are you willing to risk for a
game?” In that question, what do you consider the word “you” to be referring to?
2. Philosophers will almost always critically analyze the answers proposed by other philosophers. Read the ideas written by others in an attempt to answer the philosophical inquiry (question). Critically analyzing those ideas entails thinking about the advantages, disadvantages, and consequences presented by the different philosophies. In this case, you may use your textbook (chapter 4) and the positions presented in Reid (2012) to serve as a foundation for your critical analysis. While you are permitted to share which perspective(s) guided your thinking about the question, you are NOT required to do so in your statement. You are free to allow this to be your internal critical dialogue.
3. After critically examining possible answers to the philosophical inquiry (question), the philosopher will come to a conclusion about the best answer. This conclusion is what you are sharing with your peers. Your conclusion might support an existing theory, combine theories, modify an existing theory, or create a completely new theory. In this case, you will draw conclusions from your critical analysis of the existing theories and the evidence provided in the module or through your own research.
4. Philosophers support their conclusions. Philosophers should be prepared to support their conclusions by explaining how and why they have come to those conclusions. This includes giving reasons for rejecting certain ideas as well as accepting other ideas. Your position will be challenged by the practices and positions of others. As you develop your position, consider areas in which your position is vulnerable to being challenged and be prepared to suppocixrt the conclusions you have
drawn.
