Hello Barbara,

I found your research question, “Are physical exercise and mental health related?” very interesting. I look forward to seeing the results about your research related to exercise and mental health I believe that exercise improves people’s mental health but at the same time I have seen how athletes at a high level get anxiety because of the pressure the sport put on them. Does anybody that exercises go under the umbrella of “physical exercise” or you will have a minimum of days for people to be considered that they workout?

I look forward to your research,

Patricia

For correlation testing, a research question that would be excellent to investigate would be how does amount of gaming relate to academic grades? This question works as it aims to study to relationship between two variables and their potential influence on each other. The dependent variable of this study is the grades achieved academically every week while the independent variable is the number of hours spent gaming per week. The alternative hypothesis for the study is that there is a relationship between the amount of gaming and grades achieved. The null hypothesis for the study is that there is no correlation between the amount of gaming and grades achieved. To fail to reject the null hypothesis means that there is no significant correlation between amounts of gaming and grades achieved academically, eliminating possibility of the two variables affecting one another.

For independent t-test, a fitting research question would be how does test anxiety differ between freshman year college students and senior year college students. The research question is suitable for use with independent t-testing as it seeks to compare information between two distinct groups. The dependent variable of the study is the levels of test anxiety while the independent variable is their college year. The null hypothesis of the study is that there is no relationship between college year and levels of testing anxiety while the alternative hypothesis is that there is a significant relationship between the two variables. To fail to reject the null hypothesis means that there is no relationship between two variables, thus they do not influence one another.

For a related t-test study, a question that could be examined is how does playing basketball over time affect levels of positivity? The research question works as a related t-test study as it looks to examine the effects of an independent variable over a period of time on a single group of participants, aiming to see changes in attitudes and opinions periodically (Hoffman et al., 2022). The dependent variable in the study is the level of positivity and the independent variable is the amount of time spent playing basketball. The null hypothesis of the study is that amount of basketball played has no effect on levels of positivity. The alternative hypothesis is that the amounts of basketball played significantly impacts levels of positivity within participants over time. Failing to reject the null hypothesis means that the amount of basketball played had no effect on the levels of positivity, eliminating a relationship between the two variables.

Question: Does cold weather cause a drop in ice cream sales?

This research question is appropriate for a correlation test because this question is asking whether there is a correlation/relationship between cold weather and a drop in ice cream sales. An independent t-test is appropriate because I am using it to evaluate two variables, ice cream sales and weather temperature. This question is also appropriate for a related t-test because we can test ice cream sales during cold weather and compare that score to ice cream sales in warm weather.

The dependent variable in this research question is ice cream sales and the independent variable is weather temperature. I would measure ice cream sales by looking at the dollar amount sold, and the weather temperature would be measured in Fahrenheit.

The alternative hypothesis for this research is, If there is a drop in weather temperature, then there will also be a drop in ice cream sales. The null hypothesis would be, If there is a drop in weather temperature, then there will be no change in ice cream sales.

To fail to reject the null hypothesis means that the results of this research were not statistically significant enough to determine whether a drop in weather temperature causes a drop in ice cream sales.
