On the first page of Chapter 6 Treuer writes about American Indians, even as our populations are growing, something else, I fear, is dying: our cultures. Why does Treuer feel that Indian culture is dying as their populations rise?

In order to ensure that everyone thoroughly reads the chapter and contributes to Thursday’s discussion, I am asking all students to answer the following questions BEFORE class. Provide clear examples from the book. (Chapter is attached as file, Chapter does not need to in essay format – the questions just need to be answered)

2. Much of Chapter 6 is about Native American activism, beginning with AIM in the 1960s up through current activism by a new generation of Indians. What has changed and why is Treuer more confident about the kinds of activism we see today?

3. Tribes have a right and a responsibility to decide who is a member and who is not. What are the various ways in which someone establishes or proves tribal membership? What are the challenges with proving membership in some places?

4. From what you read in this chapter, what are the benefits and problems associated with living on a reservation? Cite specifics from the chapter.
