Based on your personal experience during the performance of the play, you will write a
Two-page (no longer, no shorter)
review of a single and particular aspect of the performance that you either liked or disliked, and why or why not?
O R
single and particular aspect of the performance (not the script)
that made the strongest impression on you, and why?
No script analysis
Do not analyze the script, but stay focused on specific aspects of the performance you observed and analyze them.
No character analysis
If you choose to write about the performance of a particular actor, focus on the performer and his
or her performance, not the role or character he or she played.
No plot summary
Do not rely on or base most of your paper on explaining any of the story or what-happened-when in terms of the script.
Do: Make observations about a specific aspect of
the performance and analyze them, including your opinions, thoughts, and feelings regarding those observations. That should be the major substance of your paper.
For example:
You might have found the performance of a particular actor to be very moving and emotional. It might have seemed as if they were very invested in creating a realistic interpretation of the character. How so? Why? What did they do specifically that made you feel that way?
In your paper you would provide and analyze two or
three specific examples during the performance
that support and illustrate your observation and assertion. O R You might have found the scenery changes between scenes and acts to have been messy and distracting. How so? Why? So what? Analyze your specific observations.
What one specific thing did you like most or least about the performance overall?
Why?
How did it make you feel? Explain in detail.
How did you interpret it? Would you do it differently? Why? How so?
Make two or three specific observations about your topic and then be sure to analyze them when you do.
