Class: Negotiation
You will analyze a conflict conversation taking place in one of the three movies listed in the ‘Required Texts and Movies’ section of the syllabus ( I choose Avatar (20th Century Fox, 2009). Directed by James Cameron). Your analysis will apply the concepts and frameworks we have gained over the course of Weeks #5 and #6, concepts were:
~ Understand the profound effect communication issues have on conflict
development.
~ Discuss the fragility of conflict communication using professional terminology.
~ Analyze specific conflict conversations while applying a linguistic-based model.
~ Reframe adversarial and antagonistic messages into productive statements.

Conduct and write your analysis following these instructions:

1. Choose a scene that contains a conflict interaction /conversation between two parties and briefly identify the scene in your paper. You may assume that I am thoroughly familiar with the movie.

2. Analyze the conversation under three of the following headings based on Tannen’s text:

Conversational signals and devices
Meta-messages
Directness/indirectness
Power and solidarity
Complementary schismogenesis
3. Describe the three conversations wrapped up in this interaction, according to the Difficult Conversations model:

The What Happened conversation
The Feelings conversation
The Identity conversation
4. Identify and briefly describe (3-4 lines each) three of the eight elements of Social Intuition listed by Schneider and Ebner (2017) manifesting in the interaction.

[Alternatively, identify two elements listed in the chapter, and propose a third, original, element of your own. Provide one definitional sentence explaining it, another explaining why you view this as an aspect of social Intuition, and a sentence or two identifying its manifestation in the scene].

Include a short introduction with a thesis statement and a conclusion.
Papers must be double-spaced, Times New Roman font 12, and should not exceed a maximum of 1700 words (including the introduction and conclusion, but the words in the reference list do not count)
Your work should rely on in-class sources; additionally, sources you identify and apply independently are welcome. Use APA format to cite all sources, in-text and in the reference list at the end of the paper.
