INSTRUCTIONS
Write a report entitled [Name of cargo type]: a Case Study and Critical Evaluation of Shipboard Regulation and Safe Operational Practice.
You are to choose one of the cargoes from the list below. These are known to have safety and/or environmental concerns around loading, discharge, and carriage by sea. All such cargoes have operational practices and regulations embedded in SOLAS, MARPOL and industry guides for safety and environmental protection.
Word limit 2,000 words +/- 10%

Group B dry bulk cargoes: suggested case studies wood pellets – mv Corina 2015; -fertiliser – mv Cheshire 2017; Coal – several reports are available of unnamed ship incidents.
Packed containers: suggested case studies Eugen Maersk 2013 and X-Press Pearl 2021
Timber deck cargoes: suggested case studies Graig Rotterdam 2016 and Mimasaka 2010; several reports are available of unnamed ship incidents
SUMMATIVE SUBMISSION – REPORT STRUCTURE
Your Report must be structured as shown below. Figures (images, charts and diagrams are all called figures) and tables must be numbered, given a title and source, and embedded in the text, NOT placed as an appendix (unless exceptionally large). Start each major section on a new page, by inserting a page break at the top. Number your pages. Use the Harvard system of referencing and Ariel 12-point font with line and a half spacing on A4 page size. Must use textbooks and academic sources.
Your report will have:
Title page
Executive Summary (NOT an introduction but a concise summary of the report, to include your findings and recommendations) on its own page, single spaced.
List of contents, List of figures, List of tables (you are recommended to automate these, see https://guides.lib.umich.edu/c.php?g=283073&p=1886010 )
Section 1 Introduction (About 250 words)
– This will briefly introduce the cargo type that you are researching and the concerns around its safe handling (supported by citations to at least 2 academic sources and 2 industry or government sources). Your outline should include an aim for the final report (what you are trying to achieve) and a summary of the report structure.
Section 2 Literature review of the environmental and safety regulation of ships and cargoes (about 500 words)
– A theoretical and academic review, using mainly academic book/journal sources, (with some other reputable online sources such as intergovernmental organisations, government sources, statistic providers), of the environmental and safety regulation of ships and cargoes. Start with a broad approach to safe operations (such as risk assessment, safety culture, accident theory), and maritime regulation (for ships, cargoes and the environment), then narrow down to as close as possible to your particular cargo type (not all cargo types will have an academic paper written about them but they do have relevant regulations).
Section 3 Critical evaluation of the International Regulations around your cargo type (about 500 words)
Section 4 use your case study or studies together with relevant industry guides and any other information to examine problems around safe operations in practice (About 500 words)
Section 5 Discussion and conclusion (about 250 words)
– What do your findings mean?
– Show how you have achieved your research aim.
– Make some recommendations based on your research findings.
