`1. What is the Modal Ontological Argument (according to Van Inwagen)?
Provide an argument with numbered premises, and a conclusion. Also give reasons for the premises as sub-premises (use letters for these).
Your answer should look something like this:
Whatever begins to exist has a cause.
There is nothing existing now that had no cause.
The universe began to exist.
Science says the universe began to exist.
If the universe didn’t begin to exist, it wouldn’t exist now.
Therefore, the universe has a cause. (conclusion)
*Note, I don’t say these sub-premises should be accepted.
2. Briefly explain the key terms of the argument (providing examples may be helpful). e.g., possible world, necessary, possible, essential.
3. Is this a good argument?
3a) Do the premises support the conclusion (is it valid)?
3b) Are the premises true?
4. Is there a way of improving this argument, and defendicixng it from your criticisms?
