Kitchen Design Project
The student completes an original kitchen design project focused on sustainability, including the Facilities Design, a Budget, and a Master Production Schedule and Gantt charts. Activities from the book will be used to complete project criteria. This is a semester-long project.
Master Production Schedule and Gantt Charts Criterion
Chapter 12, Activity 2:
Design a master schedule for implementing a computer system in a campus dining facility. Construct the skeleton of a Gantt chart using the following information:
It is August 15, and you have just learned the university has budgeted enough money to capitalize a computer system for dining services. You must have the new system operational by the beginning of the next fiscal year, which will occur on July 1. There are 10.5 months to purchase, install, and test the new system.
The specifications for the new system were made during the previous budget cycle; the decision regarding what hardware and software to buy has already been made. The package will be purchased immediately, with a delivery date of August 31.
Final testing of the system will take a month, so the system should be up and running by June 1.
The other activities to be included on the master schedule are:
installation of equipment
rewriting recipes for compatibility with the new system
compiling a list of all ingredients needed
establishing inventory levels and prices for each ingredient
entering data for items 2 through 4 into the new computer system
designing procedures for using the system
training the staff on the new system
The additional information you will need follows.
Existing management staff will provide the information needed for data entry, but they must also continue to perform their regular jobs.
Two thousand hours will be needed to enter the data.
Each of the eight work-study students can work fifteen hours weekly doing data entry.
Five computer terminals are available for the students to use.
A consultant will be hired for twenty hours per week for three months to write procedures and train the staff.
Chapter 16, Activity 3:
Make a Gantt chart (see chapter 12) for how you will transition to the new student identification system described in Chapter 12, Activity 2. Include the tasks to be done and a time frame for each task to implement the new system.
