Mary Robinson – “The Negro Girl” and Rudyard Kipling- “The White Man’s Burden”

For this answer you should provide two very specific pieces of evidence in the form of quotations. Be specific in your discussion and analysis of the text. When using quotation, provide line numbers for poetry and volume/chapters for novels, page numbers for short story.

Your evidence should come from different places in the text to show that you read the whole thing and to demonstrate that your argument applies to the whole text and not just one small part.
You should follow your evidence with explanation that clearly shows why that evidence proves your point.

Question

1. Both Robinson and Kipling create a contrast between the different races of black and white in their poems; however, they do this to very different ends. Give one example from each poem about how they set up a contrast between slaves (Robinsons poem) and natives (Kiplings poem) and white people. Then, discuss what you think is the purpose of that contrast, what are Robinson and Kipling each trying to accomplish? What message are they trying to convey to their readers?
