Marginalized groups

Assignment Parameters
Analyzing Marginalization through Written and Visual Media–Argument based on Textual Analysis, using as evidence, a minimum of Six (6) Written Sources from the assigned readings.

Essay will be the equivalent of 1,000-1,300 words (4-5 typed pages)
Required: Correct in-text citations ().
NOTE: NO outside research is allowed for this–or any–paper in this class. For your sources for Essay #1, you must use evidence from six of the articles as instructed below (choosing from groups in the table).

Remember: As stated above, this essay is not a “personal” essay; rather, it is an argument based on the synthesis and development of claims made through your analysis of the readings. While your personal experiences may help you with critical thinking (and they may give you special insight into others’ lives) you may not use yourself or your own experience as evidence in the body paragraphs.

General Directions
The purpose of this essay is to practice objective analytic skills with written analysis, and to formulate an essay in which you argue effectively and persuasively with evidence from the module readings to support your claims.

The goal of this assignment is for you to recognize the varied and diverse forms of marginalization within American culture and the affects on those individuals. Through that study and written analysis, students will discover that there is a human commonality of experience that connects us all to one another.

Specific Directions
PROMPT:

You are to write a persuasive argument about how six demographic groups (two from each LIST below) are marginalized in this country, locate the ways they are marginalized and argue how that marginalization affects their lives.

You are NOT to argue by example (meaning that the people in the articles are NOT in your topic sentences; rather, the people in the articles are to be used as EVIDENCE for the arguments in each of your body paragraphs). You also are not to refer to yourself or your experiences as evidence or explanation in the body paragraphs.
