For this essay, you need to craft an essay on the relations between managerial control and worker autonomy. The purpose of this paper is to explain why managers claim control of the labour process, why workers may engage in collective action to improve their incomes and working conditions, and how such collective action might impact management strategies. To do this, you need a thesis statement that allows you to decide which arguments from the readings you will use to develop your own line of argument. You also need to ensure that your arguments are in line with empirical findings presented in the readings. You are not expected to do further research. But you can, if you like. If you do, make sure to use scholarly sources and properly cite them. Also, use theories as a conceptual framework around which you can organize empirical evidence. The readings assigned in Chapters 8 through 14 introduce theories of bureaucracies, organizations, and managerial control and conflict. Look at them first, see which ones suit the arguments you want to advance, and construct your conceptual framework out of them before looking for the piece of evidence you need to support your arguments. Remember the textbook concentrates on Canada, and so should your facts.

-The general rule is that every paragraph, with the possible exception of the introduction and the conclusion, should have at least one citation. If your paragraph does not need a citation, one may wonder how important it is to your larger assignment. It would therefore be helpful to cite specific pages and quote specific passages. Although APA citation often involves abstracts, none of your assignments should include one. You can use other materials but they should supplement your discussion, not substitute for it.
-For this assignment, it would be helpful in your discussion to split managerial techniques into two. The first category would consist of those techniques that were common at the beginning of the 20 th century (and often are still common now), and to which the rise of unions is partly a reaction to. The second category would consist of those techniques which in the last five or six decades managers have used either to revise the problems with the first set of managerial techniques, to improve work arrangements, or respond to unions. In discussing these aspects you need to discuss both how effective they are and how widespread they are. These two aspects are key to any argument you have about how the efficacy of managerial control.
