RationaleIn our readings for this unit, we talked about liminality as a period of transition and about the challenges of adjusting to those transitional spaces. Understanding liminal spaces and how to use tools to navigate those areas of transition are part of gaining control over new environments. For this first writing assignment, we will examine a time when you experienced a liminal space.
Specifically, this Literacy Narrative assignment asks you to tell the story of a transition/ transformational moment in your life as you gained a literacy. You are now fluent in many kinds of communication/competencies. Reflect on a time before you were highly capable in one kind of literacy, when you were still in a liminal space on the path to learningnot entirely ignorant of a new literacy but far from fluent in it.
Because, influential experiences on our paths to literacy have affected, and may even haunt, our approach to education and our career choices, a thoughtful examination of past experiences can put these events in perspective and help us tackle future periods of transition.
BackgroundWhat is Literacy? For this class, we will adapt the Educational Development Center (EDC) philosophy that literacy is an individual’s ability to manipulate a set of codes and conventions and put those skills to work in shaping the course of her or his own life. According to the EDC, literacy can “transform lives,” whether it is “the words of a language, the symbols in a mathematical system, or images posted to the Internet.” Thus, literacy describes more than the foundations of reading and writing; it refers to the acquisition of a new language, form of communication, or skill as a means of increasing participation in a discipline, social group, team, culture, social class, etc.
Assignment InstructionsIn an essay of three or more double-spaced pages (approx. 750 words), write a focused literacy narrative that identifies and reflects on a personal experience or series of related experiences that strongly influenced you as you gained a literacy that you now possess. Your narrative should build to a moment of insight with which your readers can relate. Conclude with a brief assessment of your current relationship with literacy as a result of this experience. Use no outside research required for this essay. Write about your own experience(s).
