How have dictatorships affected the life (experience) of Latin Americans as citizens? How do The President, Mothers and Shadows, The Official Story, Scraps of Life, and any of the secondary scholarship provided in this course explain how (1) the experience of living under a repressive state apparatus and (2) the impossibility of changing that apparatus from within the system give post-regime democracies a particular character? Use at least two quotes from each of the novels and as many other references as possible.
You must use readings assigned for class in support of your argument. You may add supplementary readings as long as (1) you have read the entire work that you cite (essay, chapter, book, etc.), and (2) you fully annotate the citation with information about how you found the source, where you found it, and why you needed a supplementary source beyond the assigned readings to support your argument.
