Written Assignment #1: Jazz Origins
For this assignment, you will be listening to portions of the following two pieces:
First listen to Empty Bed Blues from 00:00 to about 3:00. Describe the role of the trombone in this piece. Also describe some of the musical elements covered in previous chapters that you hear the trombonist using.
Now listen to Solace from 00:00 to about 03:03. Based on what you’ve read in the text, briefly define what a swing feeling is. After comparing the two pieces, which has a more predominant swing eighth note feeling?
Briefly describe the role of the piano in each piece. How does the text define the concept of stride piano? Which of the two pieces features a more traditional stride piano approach in the left hand?
What are your impressions of the two pieces? Did you prefer one more than the other? If so, why? Are there some specific musical elements in either of the pieces you really enjoy hearing? Please provide some specific examples by using counter numbers (minutes and seconds on your media player).
