The thesis (argument, opinion, or claim) is the main point of the essay. It is the primary
argument upon which the entire essay will focus. The thesis must address the specifics of the
assignment, and the thesis must be exclusively yours.
In EH 1301, when the assignment requires, the thesis must be placed as the last sentence in
the introductory paragraph.
The thesis must be one complete, underlined declarative sentence. Neither colons nor
semicolons are permitted in the thesis.
The thesis must be stated as an omniscient argument, and the thesis must be a debatable
opinion developed after completion of the reading assignments.
Leave yourself and anyone else out of the thesis. No one, by name should be in the thesis.
Avoid the use of quotations in the thesis.
Avoid the use of clichs in the thesis and in any other part of an essay.
The thesis must be supported in all paragraphs of the essay.
Avoid forms of the verb be in the thesis (be, is, am, was, being, are, been, were).
The thesis must be reaffirmed (not in the same words) in the concluding paragraph of the
essay. Nothing in the concluding paragraph should be underlined.
