Discuss specific examples of how parents display both Emics and Etics in fulfilling their child-rearing roles around the globe.
Essay 2- The Spirit of the Olympic Games: The 2022 XXIV Olympic Games in Beijing, China on February 4 20, 2022 offered rich opportunities for promoting goodwill as the world paused to support our champions. Do you recall the experience of seeing athletes from 200 countries march into a stadium in February or as a team in the Summer 2021 Olympic Games (or previous Games)? What purpose can the emblem of a national flag, song and team uniforms serve? Apply Geert Hofstedes (2001) research on cultural dimensions presented in Chapters 1 and 2: Consider Competitiveness as a personality trait. Would Hofstede say this attribute is a more powerful motivator for achievement in athletes from an Individualistic Culture? How would he explain the roles of group cohesion and social support for athletes from a Collectivist Culture? Discuss the role of both of these cultural dimensions in sports.
Essay 3- Communication in a Pandemic: There are many potential obstacles to be navigated when engaging in intercultural and intracultural communication discussed in Chapter 10. How have Covid-19 health precautions of wearing masks and avoiding handshakes/hugs affected our habits of relating to others? Apply Edward Halls classic model of Proxemics to this topic of communication patterns. How may this model be altered by the current practice of social distancing? How may our understanding of Haptics be permanently changed? Discuss some potential problems/misunderstandings in communication that may occur when the ground rules for communication change across the globe. Propose solutions that could address these challenges for American culture and around the world.
