“The work of this class has been oriented toward constructing a concept of freedom that takes seriously what contemporary author Christina Sharpe calls “the wake” of slavery. The course attempted to show that in the wake of slavery there is a political and philosophical concept of freedom that both founds and troubles the political project of the American republic. The final paper is an invitation to think through the complex question of the relation of freedom as a philosophical and political concept and project, and the historical practices and continuing legacies of transatlantic chattel slavery using the many texts and ideas discussed during the quarter. This reflection will be presented in the form of an argumentative essay.”

The concept of freedom is, is very subjective and has been up to interpretation for students, in general, we want to take the position that the racial contract is very real, it affects black Americans, and it disrupts the true definition of American freedom since there are people who cannot enjoy freedoms without succumbing to the consequences of slavery and discrimination.
