1. In The Propaganda of History, Du Bois criticizes the work of historians of the Civil War and Reconstruction for the way they distort history to suit their assumptions. Black Reconstruction provides an alternative picture of history that starts out from very different premises. Today, another alternative vision of history has been developed and popularized by Nikole Hannah-Jones and her colleagues. It first appeared on August 14 of 2019 in The New York Times under the heading of The 1619 Project. It claims that the consequences of slavery and the contributions of African Americans should be placed at the center of US history. In other words, the founding of the US began in 1619 with the arrival of the first enslaved rather than in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. Hannah-Jones argues that African Americans have not only created vast material wealth through their bondage but have also been the perfecters of democracy. After carefully reading the original article from The New York Times and basing yourself on your reading of Black Reconstruction as well as Du Bois two articles on Marx and Marxism, how do you think Du Bois might respond? Where would he agree and where might he diverge?
2-Start with a short summary of Nikole Hannah-Jones article and follow up with a commentary from the standpoint of Du Bois. You might consider Du Bois view of the conflict between the economic systems of capitalism and slavery and how racial divisions combine with class divisions to produce different interests behind the Civil War, Reconstruction and its demise.
