In the Beginning

Commentary 1: “In the Beginning”

IN THE BEGINNING…

The texts for this week’s commentary are:

Starr: “A Nation-State”
Starr: “Queen Califa’s Island”
Roman: “Bay of Smokes”

Write a Commentary that expresses a position you now hold about early California/Los Angeles.

Thinking about all the texts, write about the ideas that you strike you most this week. What makes you think/wonder? What about? What do you find surprising? What do you want to know more about? How do the texts intersect in interesting ways?

Remember to:

1.write a commentary that is 300-600 words and thoughtfully discusses the texts we are reading that week.

2.save your work (commentary) in word

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMMENTARIES:

1.Do your assigned reading!
2.Think about the salient topics/ideas/information–basically, ask yourself:
-What do you learn?
-What do you take away from the texts?
-What do they make you wonder/think about?
-What stands out and interests you?

3.After you narrow down #2, determine:

-What is your opinion on those topics/ideas? Why? What makes you think that? What evidence is your opinion based on?

4.Make a claim or statement ABOUT the materials
-DO NOT summarize the reading in Commentaries

5.Support your claim or statement

DO use quotations or paraphrases from the reading to support your claim or statement
