The paper must be a critical essay 4-5 pages; or, no less than 1000 and no more than 1250 words; 12-point font; 1 margins
FOCUS: Focus your paper narrowly and precisely. In a short paper, a tight focus is essential.
ARGUMENT:
You must have an argument: you must present and defend a clearly
articulated thesis. We prefer a paper that carefully: 1) details the argument in an introduction; 2) develops that argument in the body of the paper where you present a careful assessment of the most cogent evidence; and 3) concludes by either (or both)
reiterating your thesis or taking it to its logical and explanatory climax. One tactic is to pose in the introduction a significant historical question (as opposed to a straw argument) and to answer the question in the essay. You should also grapple with the key
strengths and weaknesses of your own argument/interpretation as a way to demonstrate its cogency and importance.
Regardless of approach, we are looking for compelling evidence, careful organization, narrative coherence, historical understanding, and persuasive argument.
PROSE: The quality of the writing matters. Good writing is rewarded; poor writing is penalized.
