In 6-8 pages, provide an in-depth interpretive analysis of any film of your choice. The paper must clearly state an interpretive thesis of the film that is supported by formal analysis, and that is further supported by a contextual analysis by way of incorporating any one of the following methods:
Genre: What genre can the film be placed in? In what ways does the film preserve the narrative and formal conventions of the genre, and in what ways does the film diverge from them? How do these consistencies with and variations from genre conventions contribute to your interpretation?
Authorship: If you would like to focus on the director, you might ask how the film compares stylistically and thematically with other entries in the directors oeuvre and how these similarities and differences are relevant to your main argument.
Nation and History (outside sources required): There are two broad and intertwined ways in which we can think about film historically: (a) When and where was the film produced and distributed? How are the films formal and narrative constructions engendered by and responding to its national, industrial, and historical contexts; and how can an in-depth look at these contexts contribute to your interpretation? (b) Alternatively, if the films narrative is inspired by a historical period or event, how does the film construct a perspective on that history? What attitude or mood does the film convey as it looks back on the past (e.g., nostalgic, critical, melancholic, etc.)? In what ways does the film make changes to historical reality, and how do these changes serve the perspective on history that the film expresses?
