Your paper should be around 1500 words. The paper must focus on the period covered in the first half of the course (first two units). You may choose one of the questions below, combine a couple of them, or formulate your own question. Please begin by stating which question(s) you will answer.
Make sure to engage with concrete events, people, things, ideas, and processes for a more grounded analysis. All history papers must provide causal explanations, dealing with the questions of what happened, how, and why. You always need concrete examples. Your answer should be based on course readings, lectures, and films. You may also use outside sources, prioritizing academic publications.
Why did some regions industrialize before others? Which were some consequences of industrialization in the 1800s? (For example, imperialism or urban life changes choose one!).
Explain the causes of imperial expansion in the 1800s and how it was justified. Focus on one example. You may compare it to others.
Explain what nationalism is, give at least two perspectives on the nation, and examine a historical case noting, if any, the connections with imperialism.
You live anytime between 1800 and 1945, anywhere on Earth, but you have access to primary sources from your own time and secondary sources from the future. Analyze a major event or process that results in significant changes in your society. Try to relate it to global dynamics.
