Imagine that someone has asked you, What was that Ethics class you took all about?

Write a letter to this person in response. You get to choose the person to whom you will write. I encourage you to make this fun for yourself! Who would you enjoy talking with about the class? Your younger sibling? A grandparent? A good friend? Harry Potter? Beyonce? Seriously try to make this meaningful for yourself.

In your letter, be sure that you cover the checklist of topics listed below.

Length: in order to fully respond to the items on the checklist, you should write at least 5 paragraphs.

Topics to cover in your letter:

What is philosophy in the first place? What is ethics? And what does it mean to study ethics or morality from the perspective of philosophy, vs. other areas of life where we talk about what is morally right and wrong, like in a religious setting, or in law, or in other disciplines like psychology, sociology, business or medical ethics, etc.? What sets philosophy apart? What is particular about talking about right and wrong in a philosophy class?

Does a moral philosophy class teach you what you should believe about right and wrong? Why or why not?

What are you supposed to get out of taking a moral philosophy class? (Hint: for one place to start, check out the course goals and learning objectives on the syllabus.)

Give an example of a typical sort of topic or problem you might study in a moral philosophy class, and briefly explain it. What makes this typical of what you might study in this class?

What did you personally find most interesting in the class? Or what did you personally get out of it?

Finally, what advice would you give to someone who is interested in learning more about philosophy, or about the philosophical approach to ethics in particular?
