The following essay below was written by a student responding to this discussion question:
If you were the police chief, would you attempt to require higher-education requirements first for entry-level positions or for promotions? Discuss your reasons why or why not. Do you think that the field of policing can ever be regarded as a profession if higher-education requirements are not ultimately adopted? Give several specific reasons why or why not?
Students Response:
I do believe that officers with higher levels of education have the tendency to handle situations more professionally than those who just have a high school diploma.According to police executives and academics, the intricacy of 21st-century policing necessitates a college education. With little, if any, specialized training, todays officers are expected to use evidence-based techniques and technology advancements to prevent and solve crimes, respect individuals due process rights, and handle a variety of complex challenges (Gardiner, 2021).According to research, cops with a college education create less citizen complaints. They are also less likely to be fired for misbehavior and are less likely to use force. When it comes to the use of force, police
completed college are approximately 40% less likely to use it. Use of force is defined as any action that potentially result in bodily injury, ranging from verbal threats to actual use of force (Gardner, 2021). Officers with a college education are also less likely to use their weapons. According to a study of officer-involved shootings from 1990 to 2004, cops with a college education were about 30% less likely to use their guns in the course of duty. In addition, one research indicated that police agencies that required officers to have at least a two-year degree had a lower percentage of officers assaulted by citizens than departments that did not (Mirkow, 2021). Although I feel that promotions are earned, it may be beneficial to offer sign-on bonuses for officers with a higher level of education could be beneficial to all parties. Promotional procedure, like recruiting policies, differ from
department to department. While some police agencies base promotions on the completion of a four-year degree, others do not require officers to have completed a four-year degree before getting a promotion. Furthermore, in some areas, having a four-year degree from the start may mean getting recruited at a better wage or in a higher position than someone without one. In other words, while a higher education can help you advance in your career, a four-year degree isnt always necessary (Mirkow, 2021). I feel that having individuals of different ethnic backgrounds in the police field could help with issues in diversity with the increase of unarmed black men dying at the No hands of police officers. This might ease some tension in hostile situations as well. The field of policing can be regarded as a profession without higher education requirements, but the benefits of pursuing higher education in the field are rewarding and beneficial for officers and citizens. Todays policing policy debates frequently seem to boil down to a battle between “enforcement” and “community policing.” While both sides have complexity and passion, it turns out that these techniques arent as diametrically opposed as they appear. For example, according to studies,enforcement-based measures such as”proactive policing” appear to have a measurable impact on crime reduction. 6 However, they have little or no impact on the community, whether favorable or bad (Mirkow,2021). Higher education has been proved to improve police officers technical training in the academy or on the job. For example, prospective or present police officers may participate in internships, community service, or study abroad while still in college. All of these factors have been demonstrated to improve critical thinking, moral reasoning, and variety openness. College also
promotes a greater
understanding of other
cultures. All of these abilities, when combined, are necessary for effective police work (Admin, 2020).
