Reading to a child will provide you with a perspective on children’s literature that differs from your own. Since children’s literature is written for children, understanding how and why children respond to different types of literature will enhance your knowledge of children’s literature.
Directions
Review four children’s poems found in the “100 Best Poems for Kids of All Time” website or in the List of Nursery Rhymes website. Consider the child you will read to and their interests. Consider the following recommendations for reading poetry to a child:
Prior to reading the poems to the child, practice reading the poems ahead of time. Read each poem for its meaning, paying close attention to how punctuation is used. Read slowly to give full value to each sound, phrase and idea. Consider dramatizing with actions, voice variations, and dramatic pauses (Adapted from “Reading Poetry Aloud to Children.” Poetry for Children. Chi-Fen Emily Chen, Ph. D.National Kaohslung First University of Science and Technology, Taiwan.)
Select and read two poems that you think they might like
Write about your reading experience, telling about the four poems you reviewed, the two poems you read to the child, and analyzing the experience as well as for how and why the child responded the way they did. Your writing needs to be three paragraphs composed of the following:
In the first paragraph list the authors (if known) and titles of the 4 poems you reviewed. Then write a brief summary of each poem. Identify which two you decided to read to your child and explain why you chose those poems. Describe how you thought the child would react and why.
In a second paragraph tell about your experience reading the poems to and/or with the child. Share your observations of the child’s reaction to the reading experience..
In a third paragraph reflect on the experience. Were the poems you chose to read good choices? Why or why not? What surprised you about the experience? What did you like or dislike about it? What did you learn?
