Grasping social work theories and being able to translate theory to practice is an expectation for competent and professional social work practice. This assignment provides an opportunity for the student to demonstrate competency in being able to articulate the linkages between theory and practice. The assignment follows a modified version of the DEAL model.

Instructions
Write a reflection paper in accordance with APA, 6th ed. The purpose of reflection is to generate learning, not simply a display of what was learned. Reflection is not the same as description, although description is a good first step in reflection (see Step 1). A brief paragraph to get the reader acquainted with your focus and the context is helpful. Please use sub-headings for your paper. It is expected that you will incorporate credible, scholarly information and sources into your reflection.
Paper format
Step 1: Describe
Identify and briefly describe two theories (one of which should be strengths perspective, the other should be another Human Behavior in the Social Environment [HBSE] theory) that you are using within your practicum setting to guide your work with your client system. You are likely to be using more than two theoretical perspectives, but for the purposes of this assignment, two examples will suffice.
Begin your reflection with “In preparation for this reflection, I…”. Some examples of content you might include in this section are:
Reasons why you selected the second HBSE theory
Discussions you might have had with your field instructor
Review of your Theory and Practice: Generalist, Clinical, and Community and Global course textbooks
Any other research you did or literature you reviewed to help prepare you for completing this assignment
Step 2: Examine
The “Examine” section differs from the “Describe” section in that you are expected to provide a deeper examination of how the two theories help guide you in your work with clients in your practicum setting. Give examples to illustrate your points as you describe, in depth, how the theories inform your practice. This part of the assignment must include the following:
A brief description of your practicum site and of the client system you serve, with special attention to diversity characteristics of your client group
A discussion on how each theory informs your practice with your client group (please ensure you provide roughly equal coverage for both theories)
A discussion of some of the unique challenges your client system struggles with and why your chosen theories are particularly helpful in light of these challenges
An examination of the systems of oppression that impact your client system and illustrate how your chosen theories help to address or counter the outcomes of oppression, discrimination, or prejudice
Step 3: Articulate learning
Based on the steps outlined above, answer the following questions:
What did I learn (about myself as a social worker or about clients, colleagues, communities, agencies, etc.)?
How did I learn it?
Why is this learning important to me as a developing social worker?
What will I do in my future practice, in light of this learning?
