The growth of the US manufacturing industry has slowed because companies face labor shortages as baby boomers retire and manufacturers struggle to hire the next generation. Throughout the industry, there is a shortfall of laborers to fill both entry-level jobs and positions for skilled trades. There is a lack of interest in manufacturing careers stemming from misconceptions about the types of jobs available, job security, and the production facility’s environment. We have started to see the industry-wide effort and coordination with community workforce development and educational institutions to change that perception, but companies need to do more. Now is the time for manufacturing firm leaders to create a better workplace culture to attract and retain employees. They need to build that culture by making their company a place where people feel valued, empowered, and safe.
