In The Semisovereign People (1960) E.E. Schattschneider writes, nearly all theories about politics have something to do with the question of who can get into the fight and who is to be excluded (20). This quote reflects one of the central themes of this course; namely, that who gets to participate in disputes over matters of public interest has serious consequences for what kind of policy outcomes are produced, and, ultimately, whose interests are represented in the political system. Use this quote to motivate your argument about how the development of one of the following institutions political parties, interest groups, or Progressive Era reforms has shaped participation, outcomes, and/or representation in American politics over time. Your paper should include historical examples from any of the periods we have examined so far (e.g., the Founding through the 1920s) that pertain to your argument.
The thesis and paper should be focussed on this quote “nearly all theories about politics have something to do with the question of who can get into the fight and who is to be excluded”.
My idea for time period 1 was to talk about the political parties (during the founding), discuss James Madison and his Federalist papers, and how the Constitution ultimately excluded certain individuals/groups (such as African Americans).
And then for time period 2 talk about how African Americans were disenfranchised by a range of laws that affected their voting rights. Mention of voter laws, 14th amendment
