Question: Beginning in the Progressive Era, activists and reformers sought help and guidance from the federal government to usher in new laws and protections. Explain these changes in American attitudes regarding reform and regulation. As you likely know, once the Great Depression hit, President Franklin Roosevelt further changed and influenced American attitudes regarding the responsibility of the federal government. How did the Progressive Era pave the way for further changes in the federal government’s response?
Tips for Answering: Consider the agenda of the Progressive Era reformers. They wanted to ensure the federal government was accountable to improve the lives of Americans through a variety of means such as food safety, increased access to education, and work place safety. Given the events of this period, many internal and external forces further influenced America (including the First World War). Consider how Americans were understanding their role within the world following that conflict. President Roosevelt gave his four freedoms speech as he outlined the freedoms all people should have. Consider if his freedoms also coincide with reforms and the growing role of the federal government in American society.
