John George Lambton’s was a British political reformer, as well as the Earl of Durham. He travelled to Canada from Britain after being appointed Governor General and High Commissioner of British North America. He travelled extensively throughout different regions in North America. While travelling, Lambton spoke to many colonialists, both French and English. Later he returned to Britain, and in 1839 he completed his Report on the Affairs of British North America. The report is based on his experiences in Upper and Lower Canada. The report is more commonly known as The Durham Report.
Your task is to conduct formal research to uncover the implications of the Durham Report. Aim to go beyond explaining the content of the Durham report, and focus instead on evaluating its impact on Upper and Lower Canada. You may use evidence drawn directly from the report, or secondary sources to support your analysis. Be sure to make reference to research and sources in order to support your understanding. Prepare your findings in a powerpoint, word document, or another presentation format of your choosing.
Be sure to address the following in your presentation:
How did the Durham Report depict and explain French and English relations within Canada?
How did the Durham Report influence on the idea of representative government, or self-government?
How did the Durham Report influence the ideas of Confederation?
Include in-text citations (footnotes) for all research information you make use of in your writing and presentations.
Feel free to make use of supporting images, texts, maps, artifacts, or other visuals to make your presentation more engaging.
Accompany your presentation with a properly formatted bibliography
