Fad diets have been around forever. Popularized by word-of-mouth and the media, they are either weight-loss plans that promise dramatic results in a short period of time or lifestyle-based diets that purport to have health benefits. The following lists provide a few examples of each of these categories of fad or popular diets:
low-carb, blood type, cabbage, low-fat, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers
Paleo, gluten free, vegan, Mediterranean, detox
Select a diet of interest to you (it does not have to be from the lists above) and conduct some online research on it. As you learn more about your chosen diet consider the sources of information you are using by applying the methods and approaches for evaluating a source that you learned about in the first module. Typically, the first types of websites you will come across regarding your diet will be websites promoting the diet. You may certainly use these as sources of information but be conscious about how you evaluate the validity of that information. Then write a post in which you discuss the basic idea and approach behind the diet and address these questions when sharing your findings with the class:
How does the proportion recommendation for carbohydrates, fats, and proteins compare to the standard recommendations you learned about in this module?
Does the diet provide adequate amounts of the six essential nutrients?
What types of goals would motivate an individual to choose this diet and does the diet purport to help people meet those goals? For example, if this is a weight loss diet, how does it help someone actually lose weight?
If the promoters of the diet make claims that are of a scientific nature, evaluate these claims using tips regarding how to evaluate scientific information.
Are there health risks associated with this diet?
Are there health benefits associated with this diet?
