Explanatory Synthesis

Explanatory Synthesis

An explanatory synthesis is an essay that explains the landscape of opinions and subtopics on a particular issue. The essayist should not take a position (construct an argument) on the issue; instead, the writer provides an objective, unbiased account of the salient points. Students will use 3-4 sources to explore the subtopics in a debatable issue, explaining all sides of the issue. The final draft should be 4-5 pages, using MLA formatting and citation.

Steps:

Step 1: Choose a topic that you would like to explain. Examples: global warming, the Electoral College, Daylight Savings Time, etc. (please don’t use the examples)
Step 2: Find 3-4 articles to help to explain your topic.
Step 3: Write an Annotated Bibliography (Annotated Bibliography for this Explanatory Synthesis must be 1 Page)

The Annotated Bibliography performs two main functions: first, it gives you practice with MLA formatting of the Works Cited listing. The Annotated Bibliography also helps you to begin to collect information on the articles you will use in the essay (Explanatory Synthesis).
Here are the steps you should follow for your Explanatory Synthesis Annotated Bibliography assignment:
A. Choose your topic for Explanatory Synthesis
B. Choose 3-4 nonfiction articles you would like to use for your paper
C. Read through these articles (skim the articles to get the gist to communicate in your annotations).
D. Write your MLA formatted Works Cited listing for these sources.

Step 4: Divide the issue into subtopics. What are the major factors involved in your issue?
Step 5: Compose a working thesis (non-argumentative). It should be something like this: There are many factors involved in x issue, including a, b, and c; begin to plan your paper with an outline.

Step 6: Continue to formulate outline. Your body paragraphs should thoroughly discuss and synthesize material on your sources. In a synthesis, you should include material from at least two sources in each body paragraph. You will plan this in the outline.
