Language Reclamation/Revitalization Discussion Question: Currently, there are a number of Native language revitalization and reclamation initiatives in Alaska. Who is leading these initiatives, and how are these initiatives proceeding? Please cite at least two sources from this week (readings, websites, and/or VoiceThread). Finally, explain why languages may be pivotal for one or more of the following areas: human rights protection, good governance, peacebuilding, reconciliation, and sustainable development. Response: Several projects in Alaska are leading the drive in restoring and regaining Native languages. The video “The Fight to Save Alaska’s Dying Languages” shows that Alaskans, even the last fluent Wichin speakers, are actively interested in language preservation. They are creating curriculum and dictionaries in order to pass on these languages to future generations. Wichin speaker Paul Williams emphasizes the importance of this endeavor, citing the declining number of speakers and the need to educate children. This campaign also targets broader social issues, as areas with better language preservation efforts have lower rates of social problems such as substance misuse and suicide. “Native Language – Alaska Ya Ne Dah Ah School,” the second source I chose to discuss, demonstrates a similar dedication. Kari Shaginoff, Lisa Wade, S. Shaginoff-Stuart, and Jennifer Woodward are key personalities who describe the problems and successes of language reclamation. They stress the need of community engagement, teacher training, and language integration in daily life in order to develop a feeling of cultural identity and healing. The participation of people of all ages, from preschoolers to seniors, reflects a concerted commitment to conserve linguistic history. The revival of native tongues is essential in many contexts. Languages have a close relationship with history, cultural identity, and knowledge systems. By defending indigenous peoples’ rights to preserve and advance their ancestors’ cultures and languages, their preservation helps to protect human rights. Respecting and fostering linguistic variety is a sign of inclusive policies that uphold the rights and needs of every member of the community in terms of good governance. Language revitalization can be a healing process in peacebuilding and reconciliation, repairing the historical pain caused by policies meant to eradicate these languages. Building cohesive societies requires fostering a sense of identity and belonging, which it does. Finally, indigenous languages frequently hold unique knowledge about regional ecosystems, medicinal plants, and sustainable living techniques. This is important for sustainable development. In the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, their significance is highlighted by the fact that their preservation is essential to preserving biodiversity and ecological balance.
