Explain why England of 1642 and France of 1789, Revolution led twice to the execution of a King. Charles I was beheaded by Parliament on January 30, 1649 and Louis XVI was sent to the guillotine by the National Convention on January 21, in 1793. The two brief readings (assigned in Module 3) by author Simon Court (Politics, Protestantism, and Personality and Killing the King: The Trial and Execution of Charles I) provided a profile of Charles personality and situation.
In this Module, part one of the French Revolution video and the reading “From Constitutional to Democratic Revolution” (pages 54 to 66) provide a parallel portrait of Louis personality and situation.
