There are a lot about different types of victims. For example, there are victims of aggression and crime, there are victims in circumstances of family violence and child custody, and there are victims of law enforcement and the legal system, including people who falsely confess to a crime due to police interrogation tactics, people who are tried in mental health or drug courts, and people who are convicted of a crime they did not commit.
For this paper, you have the opportunity to focus on providing services and advocacy for a group of victims of your choice.
The purpose of this paper is to apply what we know from psychological research to the design of victim services and advocacy efforts. You will effectively propose a non-profit organization that provides these things to improve circumstances for victims.
By services, I mean things like therapy, housing, mediation, etc. These are real things that can be provided for someone that will help improve the victims lives.
By advocacy, I mean educating the general public on the situation for this type of victim and the ways that the general public can assist them.
Your paper should be science- and research-based. So, if you decide to focus on the family members of drug users, for example, you should research one or some of the following:
Addiction what it looks like across the lifespan, what drugs are most problematic, etc.
How drug use affects living situations, housing, education, job prospects, etc.
The effects of drug use on the family
The links between drug use and family violence
Interventions for drug users and their families
Then I recommend that you look up service and/or advocacy organizations that already exist. This will give you ideas for how to design your own service and advocacy efforts.
Heres a suggested outline for how you could structure your paper:
I. Introduction ( page)
a. Explain who the victims are that would be the focus of your advocacy or services organization
b. Do they tend to be of a certain demographic? Such as a specific age range, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic class, etc.?
II. Explain what the research says about these victims (and also maybe the perpetrators) (2 pages)
a. What parts of their lives are affected and how?
b. Are they likely to be victimized in other ways as well?
III. Interventions (1 pages)
a. What does the research say works to improve things for these victims and/or support them?
b. Are there examples of programs or interventions that already exist?
IV. Tell us about your service and/or advocacy program/organization
V. Conclusion ( page)
